That spring, my friends Casey and Kathryn, the ones who’d gotten married on Tilghman Island, drove up from Maryland with a set of power tools and helped me assemble my new furniture. They took me to Target for a knife block and a dish rack and cheap water glasses and everything else I needed to replace all the things I’d left behind.

Forget wedding registries, we joked. What about divorce registries?

Back in the treehouse, I covered the glass door leading to my daughter’s bedroom with blackout blinds and dark paper, sprayed WD-40 on the squeaky hinges. I needed to make it dark enough for her to sleep. I was obsessed with her sleep. Her sleep was my freedom.

After her bedtime, the three of us curled up with our legs tucked beneath us on my striped brown couch and talked until we were yawning so wide we couldn’t understand each other’s voices. It felt important to fill this new apartment with company, their bodies anchoring this new space like stakes pitching a tent into the ground.
